Headmistress Somers’s office was not the decadent oasis of fairy tales. There were no talking portraits or majestic birds or curious oddities stacked in antique cabinets.

The headmistress was a practical woman. One of the many things I’d learned about her over the years was that she hated clutter. On the rare occasions when she had reason to glance into my dorm room, her distaste for my penchant for artistic chaos was so apparent on her face that it was almost laughable.

Instead of bells and whistles, her office was inhabited with a grand mahogany desk, in front of which sat two mismatching velvet chairs for students and professors who had the great honor or misfortune of setting foot in her office. Built-in bookcases lined the walls from hardwood floor to cavernous ceiling. Idly, I wondered if the answer to all of Aidan’s and my questions about my family heritage could’ve been found much quicker in Headmistress Somers’s private library.

Aidan and I sat down in the aforementioned chairs. We waited patiently and quietly for Headmistress Somers to deliver her verdict. Even given our naturally rebellious nature, we both knew that it was in our best interest to remain quiet.

Finally, the headmistress parted her lips and sighed quietly.

“To be quite honest,” she began. “I don’t know what to punish you for.”

I bit my lip. Aidan remained quiet. It wasn’t our turn yet.

“Do I punish you for the indiscretions right in front of my face? Meaning, the fact that you spelled a priceless historical artifact to lift her arm and allow you through the door of a turret that is very much off-limits. There is a reason Adelaide Darkmore stands there, after all—not to mention the ancient tapestry. We like to keep students out of the secret towers, as it discourages trouble making,” she continued. “Of course, discouraging Miss Bloodworth and Mr. Grimsbane from trouble has always required a little more effort than normal.”

I wondered what the punishment was for sneaking into an off-limits part of the castle. I’d never been caught doing it before, unless you counted that one time when I was a freshman, and I got caught using an old underground tunnel as my private potions lab. It was harmless, really; I’d only wanted a chance to practice a hair-growing potion so that I could do perfectly on the exam… and give Maude Sanders a beard for making fun of Kendra’s frizzy hair.

But Headmistress Somers wasn’t done.

“Now… I could also punish you for the implied rule-breaking that has occurred today. For example, I know both of you far too well to assume that whatever you were brewing a teleportation potion for was not merely innocent practice. However, I have no concrete proof that you actually left campus.”

She raised her eyebrows at Aidan and me as though wondering if we would come clean that easily, but she knew better than that. Both Aidan and I remained tight-lipped and composed, veterans in the area of dealing with being caught red-handed.

With a casual shrug, she sighed.
